#63 · Build a mini log cabin

Stack and notch chopsticks like Lincoln Logs to build a miniature cabin structure. You'll need many chopsticks and a lot of patience.

Stack chopsticks in alternating pairs - two running one way, two across them, repeat - and you have a miniature log cabin. It is the same construction as the toy most people remember, and the same construction as the real thing.

How to do it

1. Lay two chopsticks parallel, about 8cm apart.
2. Lay the next two across them at right angles, resting on the ends of the first pair.
3. Keep alternating direction with each layer, keeping the corners square.
4. Leave a gap in one wall for a door by using shorter pieces on those courses.
5. Add a folded card roof.

Why it works

Each layer is held in place by its own weight and by friction at the four corners where the courses cross. Nothing is fixed, and the structure gets more stable as it gets taller because there is more weight pressing the joints together - which is exactly how real log construction works.

Tips & warnings

• Snap chopsticks to length for window and door openings rather than trying to build around them.
• A dab of glue at each crossing turns a play model into a permanent one.
• Keep the corners square from the first course. Errors compound upwards fast.
