#100 · Make a wish and snap it
Hold one end each with a friend, make a wish, and snap the chopstick like a wishbone. Whoever gets the bigger piece wins. Probably.
A wishbone, but bamboo, and available in far greater quantities. Two people, one chopstick, one wish each, and a winner decided by the grain of a piece of wood neither of you chose.
How to do it
- Each person takes one end of a single wooden chopstick.
- Both make a wish, silently.
- Pull steadily outward - steadily, not a jerk, or it snaps square and nobody wins.
- The longer half takes the wish.
Why it works
Bamboo splits along its fibres rather than across them, so a slow pull propagates the break diagonally down the grain and produces two unequal pieces. A fast snap breaks it square and gives you a tie. This is the same reason a real wishbone works: it is the asymmetry, not the luck.
Tips & warnings
- Plain wooden takeaway chopsticks split best. Lacquered ones tend to break flat.
- Don't say the wish out loud. You know the rules.
- Both halves go on the compost heap afterwards.
